Portugalilaiset saapuivat ensimmäisinä Kameruniin 1400-luvulla. Hollantilaiset, britit ja espanjalaiset kävivät aina 1800-luvulle saakka ryöstämässä täältä orjia. Vuonna 1884 maasta tuli Saksan protektoraatti. Sitten Kamerun annettiin ranskalaisille ja briteille.
Kamerun itsenäistyi 01.01.1960.
