Syntyperäiset saarelaiset tunnetaan nimellä filhos da terra (maan pojat). He ovat etupäässä saarelle tuotujen orjien, siirtotyöläisten ja eurooppalaisten työläisten jälkeläisiä
Maan talous on suuresti riippuvainen kaakaon markkinahinnoista, joskin vuoden 2003 aikana ilmaantui öljyesiintymiä, jotka saattavat tuoda maalle kipeästi kaivattua pääomaa.

Principen lähitulevaisuus ? Maahan on siirtymässä Afrikan öljymaaksi. Jo nyt
se on saanut suuret ennakkomaksut tulevista öljytuloista.
Tuleeko myös tästä maasta öljytulojen myötä tyypillinen Afrikkalainen maa,
jossa korruptio rehottaa ja suurin osa öljytuloista siirtyy vain harvojen
omiin taskuihin. Se jää nähtäväksi !! ?? !!
