Muita ugandalaisia valtioita ennen siirtomaavaltaa olivat Ankole, Bunyoro ja Toro. Niiden johdossa olivat yläluokkana etiopialaiset himat. Bugandan kabakoista oli merkittävin Mutesa I (1856 - 1884).
1800-luvun lopussa (1894 - 1896) Iso-Britania muodosti paikallisista kuningaskunnista Bugandan johdolla protektoraatin ja yhdisti siihen pohjoisessa sijaitsevia alueita. Näin syntynyt uusi alueellinen yksikkö on nykyinen Uganda.
